I’m 168 years old

My little sister sent this card to me in the mail. The real mail. Reactions to the card have been equal parts horror and humor. I think it’s hilarious. Of course, I know that my sister likes me and doesn’t wish me dead … or does she?
What do you think? Inappropriate or appropriate for pet lovers?

Nastia packs a punch
My, my she looks dangerous.

“Nastia has taken the job of making sure that she attacks everything in the house at least once daily and she’s doing one heck of a bang up job,” her new mama wrote in an email. “Plus she makes our house a whole lot brighter.”
Nastia is the newest kitty addition to the Dearing-McCracken household. She was adopted from the Rocky Mountain Animal Shelter.
Yay for kittens!

Come on in. The water’s warm.
With a face like that … I’d give him some turkey.

Howie was adopted from Roice-Hurst about a year and a half ago by the Stine family. He was abandoned out by the airport.
Howie likes to hike, ride in the truck, sniff stuff and splash in water, his owner wrote in an email.
Happy Thanksgiving Penny. Thanks for the photo.

Cat on a road trip
This is the first pet photo I’ve gotten via a cell phone. The Pets Blog is officially super hi-tech. Next we’re going to start doing hologram interviews.

I have no idea who sent this or even what the cat’s name is. However, the sender-inner did include this message: “This is my himilayan and we are traveling across country together. We started from NYC and the farthest we’ve been is Arizona so far. She’s loving the break from the big city and enjoying the quiet.”
Thank you random cell phone owner for the photo.

Skip-ity-do-da

Skip picked a good family.
His owner Ralph (from Junction Daily Blog) sent me this about the new addition to his family: “We have no idea what kind of dog Skip is, except a good one … He’s an extremely disciplined dog. His previous owners/foster parents taught him to come, sit, lay, heel, stay and all the other important stuff.”
The family found Skip at a PetSmart adoption fair. Read more about Skip here.
Ralph is a big proponent of shelter dogs. “If you get a shelter dog, more likely than not you will get a pet who has already been neutered, had his shots, already knows how to mind, and who needs only love to be the perfect pet,” Ralph wrote.
Thanks for the photo, Ralph.

Something smells fishy
And it’s not my co worker’s lunch.

Mr. Harold F. Penrock is one fine fish. Apparently, he can swim through hoops and play dead, according to his owner Cassie of Grand Junction.
“We are very good friends and sometimes he follows my finger,” Cassie wrote in her email.
Thank you, Cassie. I sure do like his castle thing. How much does he pay in rent?

NEW healthy pet food store
I should have brought this news to all you Pets Blog readers sooner. Forgive me.
A couple weeks ago when I went to pick up my favorite panini at Coffee Muggers/ La Paninoteca, I noticed a sign for a new store called Howl Natural Pets.
You guessed it - it’s an all natural pet food store at 634 Main St. No. 6 in the down stairs breezeway.
I haven’t made it inside the store yet, but I got a news release about it today and talked to the general manager. Howl Natural carries products featuring whole-food ingredients, chemical free production with an emphasis on replicating a natural dog and cat diet. In the future the store will carry, bath products for pets, books, collars and leashes. The store also plans to offer nutrition education and additional organic pet friendly cleaning products and supplements.
The store is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Also sharing the space with Howl Natural is another business called K-9 Korner, a pet sitting provider.
For more information on Howl Natural call 433-6694 or visit howlnatural.com.

Poll power
Wow, 89 votes and counting in the puppy pickers poll. Thank you for participating. Looks like a shelter dog is the overwhelming winner with retrievers a not so close second.
Remember folks, keep sending your pet photos to me at samantha.stiles@gjsentinel.com and I’ll post them right here.

If you announce it on LIVE TV, that means it has to happen.

The Obamas are taking a puppy to the White House and the Pets Blog wants in on the action.
Now they just have to think of a name.

Bow down
Sneakers is my name, slobbering is my game.

“She’s waiting patiently on the front porch for trick-or-treaters so she can slobber all over them,” wrote Patti Arnold, Sneakers’ mama and Sports Editor for The Daily Sentinel.
Everybody - Patti doesn’t believe in putting clothes on dogs, but she put a bow on Sneakers just for the Pets Blog (or so I like to believe). Thank you, Patti.

Gimme, gimme
Look at this picture. LOOK AT IT!

It’s so cute my eyes burn. Now wouldn’t you like to see more pets in costumes. That’s not a questions - it’s a demand. Send the Pets blog (Samantha.Stiles@gjsentinel.com) that photo of your dog or cat dressed up as whatever (a hot dog, a politician, a character from the Wizard of Oz … whatever).
Yes, I know pets probably hate being in costumes. A co-worker told me his dog thinks he’s being punished when forced to wear anything other than his own fur (hi Buddy!). But … but, the photos are so darn cute. What’s better to look at than a doggie Darth Vader, boom box or Elvis? Seriously. A big cyber high five goes out to the person who dresses up an unusual animal like a turtle or squirrel and emails it to me (Samantha.Stiles@gjsentinel.com).
We have to try to compete with this.

Kitty + pumpkin = fun for everyone!
Trick or treat/ smell my feet/ now you get a kitty to eat.
Just kidding - don’t eat a kitty. What’s wrong with you.

“This is Missy. She was a feral kitten who was in really bad shape when we found her wandering around outside, unable to see due to an eye ailment. Her vision is just fine now, and she’s full of life and spunk! A great addition to our home,” Missy’s owner Sam from GJ wrote.
Folks, I’m still waiting on pets in costumes photos. Don’t be shy. Send them to me at Samantha.Stiles@gjsentinel.com.

Homemade pet costume ideas
Don’t forget about the pet costume contest and pet parade this Saturday, Oct. 25 at noon at Sherwood Park!
Here are ideas to help you be top dog at any pet costume contest you enter.
(Story by the St. Petersburg Times.)
Doggie Bowser, M.D. Go retro this year with a nod to the ’80s TV series that introduced us to Neil Patrick Harris. Get a play doctor’s kit, then create a doggie scrub suit with baby or toddler T-shirts that allow you to stencil or hand-letter the name of your hospital and doctor on the chest and back. Suggested name: General Horsepital.
Amy Winehound. Create a nasty mop of hair with a piece of steel wool (or something similarly ludicrous), throw in a ’60s-inspired scarf to create the chanteuse’s throwback look, then add in a chain with a shot glass dangling from it and you’ve got yourself a doozy of a boozie.
Pup Hogan. Let’s face it, brother, this costume is going to be wayyy out of style next year, so milk it now. Get yourself a tiny tie-dyed bandanna, add a heavy metal rock band or Ed Hardy T-shirt look and garnish with a gnarly mustache made out of yellow yarn . Bonus points if you can figure out a way to have a constantly present entourage and camera crew for the reality series that never ends.
Tiger Woofs. The world’s top golfer is easy to emulate. Think red and black and intimidating for the ensemble. Then create a doggie wallet that features a Nike swoosh on the outside and contains an American Express card, a set of Buick keys and a Gatorade paycheck. Extra credit for a splint on any leg.
Michael Yelps. Everyone’s favorite Olympic swimmer should really be reserved for the swimming breeds like Labs, golden (ha!) retrievers and the occasional water spaniel. Create some faux gold medals, add some Doggles and finish it off with a rubber cap that you create from a large black balloon (don’t forget the ear slits). Golden!
- Story by Anne Glover, St. Petersburg Times, Scripps Howard News Service
I’ll post the top pet costumes of 2008 later today - check back! And send me your pet pictures (bonus points for pets in costume).

Kitty nose ENHANCED
Look at that soft pale pink nose.
Noses are only rivaled in cuteness by fluffy white clean paws.

The kitty cat is Tiny Bubbles and the black lab is Shasta. Shasta, 6, was rescued from the Mesa County Animal Shelter in Jan. 2008.
“She loves to walk, go camping and ride in the car,” Shasta’s GJ owner Heather said.
“I got Tiny as a kitten 5 years ago, and in typical cat fashion, she ‘allows’ the family to share a house with her. She is very spoiled, pampered and more often than not, gets her way. I’ve always had animals in my life and couldn’t imagine life without them. I believe our pets are good for our souls, peace of mind and help alleviate stress in a busy world.”
Thanks for the photos, Heather. Good job taking the pictures!

Actually, elmo, we (and the vet) think he’s part black lab and part terrier, maybe Airedale being the terrier part.
He’s a medium-large dog, about 24” at the shoulders and 56 lbs.
